[YW]In The Beginning
[YW]________________
This is one small lap in the
first wave of the tide that's
building and gathering, ready to
sweep over the future.
In a real sense this IS the
future -- Electronic Publishing.
Like other computer-related de-
velopments, it changes every day.
A few months ago an announcement
party in the Big Apple heralded
the launching of a major new
authoring program.
Honored guests included such heavy
hitters in the fiction writing
trade as Tom Clancy, Stephen King,
Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, and
Amy Tan.
Robert Gottlieb, executive vice-
president of the William Morris
talent agency, told the guests
that "It's bigger than the
Industrial Revolution. At this
stage in the game," he said,
"it's bigger than the motion-
picture business. There are
more dollars at stake."
At this point electronic
publishing is useful mostly
for reference, technical,
scientific, and how-to-do-it
books (of which this is one).
Visionaries in the ranks of
publishers, users and writers,
alike, await with impatience the
day when a personal digital
assistant (PDA) becomes practi-
cal for the general user.
Then, a library of several dozen
popular fact-based books and
light fiction may be carried in
briefcase or purse.
In the meantime, here's a useful
e-book for any writer.
Read. Think. Learn. Enjoy.
